A personal website

Hello, I’m Daniel. Have a look around.

This is where I share my projects when they’re ready: exhibitions that explain how the world works, photographs taken through my microscope, things I’ve built in my workshop, and the gatherings I host. Wander wherever you like.

The Shape of Light

When you look at something, what are you actually seeing?

An exhibition in two rooms. The first follows light from a lamp, through a microscope, into your eye. The second follows it past the edges of sight, from radio waves to gamma rays. In every chapter you predict what the light will do, then find out.

Twelve chapters and an epilogue · about four hours, best in several visits

Hidden worlds

The Darkroom

Plants, animals and the small lives in pond water, photographed through my microscope in phase contrast and dark field.

A lengthwise section of a Selaginella cone glowing against black, a central stalk lined on both sides with round spore cases, several packed with spores. Two egg-shaped slime mould spore cases on long, thin stalks, their walls a lattice of fine threads, lit gold against a dark ground.Dozens of round Volvox colonies in deep red, crowded across a black field, each a sphere of tiny cells.A cross-section of a beach grass leaf curled into a horseshoe, its ridged inner surface studded with veins, on black.Clusters of translucent Volvox colonies with daughter colonies inside them, drifting across a dark field speckled with small cells.A section through a dandelion flower head, a row of pale blue-green florets, each with a small red-orange body at its base.

In preparation

Workshop

Objects made by hand: chessboards, a stand-up paddleboard, a bench, frames. A few chessboard commissions a year, built to house old chess sets.

Cabinet

A notebook of curiosities: ideas, people and questions, each connected to others and revisited over time.

Gatherings

The Antithetical Society, a book club that reads two books at once, and small-group trips built around a place or an idea.
